Five minutes with Mari Muela
Tell us about yourself
My name is Mari and I'm the Director of the accounting and reporting department in Barcelona. I started working in Baker Tilly in April 2015, and in August 2018 I left to pursue a new professional adventure. However, sometimes life works in mysterious ways, and I returned to work at Baker Tilly in January 2020.
If you were not a Director in Accounting what would you have liked to be and why?
I don't think I could pick just one thing to be or to do as I like and enjoy doing many things. I would definitely combine my career with activities in nature. I think it's important to try new things and be curious during our lives.
What made you begin your career in accounting?
I started my career in accounting at Baker Tilly. I had no previous experience in accounting having studied Business and Management. I was looking for an opportunity to change my professional life since I wasn't happy with what I was working in before, this career has allowed me to meet incredible people inside and outside Baker Tilly. I've learnt a lot in different but adjacent fields (legal, tax, labour) and it's offered me the most important challenges in my life, professionally.
What inspires you day to day?One of the things that inspires me the most is being able to learn new things in different fields
One of the things that inspires me the most is being able to learn new things in different fields. With the availability of webinars organised by Baker Tilly and external companies, social media informative accounts and e-learning platforms, it's easy to find what you are looking for and be able to have a more complete education that uplifts you professionally and personally.
How do you think the pandemic has changed the way we work?
The pandemic has shown us that working at home is possible and can offer us a more balanced professional and personal life. It’s also has made us realise the importance of personal relationships. We need contact with our colleagues, and it's essential to have these relationships and take care of them.
How do you see the future of the accounting industry changing?
The accounting industry will certainly change in the coming years thanks to technology. We must ride the wave of new technologies and adapt our business, so we can keep offering the best quality services and innovating in the scope of services that we offer.
