Five minutes with Marc Mercader

Tell us about yourself

My name is Marc Mercader, Legal Manager in Baker Tilly Spain in Barcelona. I’ve been with the team for a little over five months, having worked in several law firms throughout my 10-year career in the legal sector, specialising in corporate and M&A law.

I’m fortunate enough to hold dual citizenship:  my dad is from Barcelona and my mom is originally from Boston (actually a small town in Cape Cod, which is even better!). My younger brother is now living and working in Los Angeles after around five years in San Francisco.

Something people don’t know about me is that I was actually aiming for a career in science - biology to be exact - but after a set of circumstances I ended up going to law school. Best decision I ever made!

Outside of work, what keeps you busy?

My 14-month old Leo is a handful! I can’t remember the last time I actually...procrastinated and did nothing. Parenting is without a doubt the greatest challenge I’ve ever had to face, but the greatest gift life has given me.

If you could give yourself one piece of advice when you started your career, what would it be?

I love this question because it allows me to gain perspective on where I am and where I come from. One thing I keep realising as I grow older and wiser is not a day goes by without facing the reality that I know nothing.

At the risk of sounding cliché, the one thing I'd say to my former self if I had the chance is: "Don't expect to know everything just because you've studied like crazy for six years. This has only started. Be humble, always. Learn from everybody and every situation you face - funnily enough, the more experience you gain, the more you realise you've still got a long way to go."

What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

If you don’t enjoy doing something, it's not worth it - move on to the next thing.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the global Baker Tilly network?

Most definitely the people. Everyone I've encountered so far is amazing in so many ways. I've had the chance to work alongside incredible professionals (certainly the best I've ever encountered, by a mile) from whom I've learnt so much and absolutely incredible human beings. I'm really having a ton of fun.

What opportunities within Legal are there for your firm in the next few years?

Hands down, the one thing that made me immediately decide to join the Baker Tilly family is the fact that the possibilities with this legal team are endless. Even after all the accomplishments we have achieved, I feel like we still have a blank sheet of paper in front of us and we get to write our own history. My challenge now is to live up to expectations and be able to contribute to developing our potential. We are aiming for the stars!
